𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭 𝐀𝐏𝐈 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧?

As a curious Revit User working on a large project, I've realized how repetitive manual work can get on 30+ levels... So I had to find a better way.

Like many before me, I've started exploring Dynamo. But after a while I needed an alternative.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐩𝐲𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭?

I was introduced to pyRevit and it's awesome.
It's an open-source add-in, that allows us to create custom Revit Toolbar with a folder structure.

There are hundreds of code examples and that's what makes pyRevit so accessible to beginners. But it's not enough to see the source code, you still need to understand how to use it.

𝐏𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬

I've started without any coding skill.

I've taken a few free python courses to get the basics and started practicing. I made some horrible scripts, but they worked and that's what mattered. And I improved over time.

If you’re starting out, I recommend the CS50 Introduction to Python by Harvard on edX. Many students in my course said, it provided the necessary basics to focus on the Revit API.

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭 𝐀𝐏𝐈

Python was the fun part, but Revit API was on another level.

Revit API is very niche topic, so there are not so many resources out there. I've spent hours, if not days on some problems because I didn't have the basics. But it didn't stop me. I've learnt more and I started practicing more.

I would often have a 10 hrs task, but it could be automated with 5-15 hours of coding. I did it every time, and sometimes I would save some time, even if other times I spent more.

But it didn't matter. I still improved my Revit API skill even when I failed. And if I spent more time writing the code, the next time I got the same task, it took me minutes instead of hours. That's the power of automation.

We should embrace this coding journey, and take it one step at a time. Overtime, you will be amazed at what you can achieve.
